Hydrogen refueling station flexible and compatible with current gas stations

Based on the current regulation for high-voltage electricity safety considerations, not all of gas stations can equip chargers. Usually, it is recommended to have additional spaces for chargers which are distant from the oil storage tank. Therefore, the charging station sometimes needs to find another land to build. In the metropolitan area where the land is expensive, it needs to consume a lot of costs for the construction of charging station. The hydrogen refuel station does not need such a high voltage and can be attached to the existing gas station. In the future, as the demand increases, the hydrogen supply will be gradually increased. It has the advantage of being fully compatible with the old and new energy sources, which can reduce the cost of developing land. Even hydrogen production equipment can be installed, which is extremely beneficial to remote areas, and does not rely on the transportation of hydrogen tankers.

For example, in early 2021, the US-based hydrogen fuel company PowerTap Hydrogen Fueling announced a cooperation agreement with the Andretti Group, and in the same year began to install PowerTap's hydrogen refueling facilities for some of Andretti's gas stations. Andretti does not have many gas stations in the United States, only more than 100. The larger chain gas stations have less burden, so they have the courage to embrace hydrogen fuel. Each hydrogen refueling station will be equipped with PowerTap's patented on-site steam methane reforming hydrogen system with a minimal footprint, converting natural gas and tap water into high-purity hydrogen at a claimed production cost of $2-3 per kilogram. The company plans to start installing hydrogen refueling facilities at 39 gas stations in California in 2021, and then expand to gas stations in other regions for installation. In the future, it expects to build 500 hydrogen refueling stations across the United States.
