From 2021, petrochemical companies to make big moves to invest in hydrogen energy

Green hydrogen is limited by the current technical level and is relatively disadvantageous in terms of cost, but from 2021 onwards, the industry will have breakthrough practices one after another. Iwatani Corp., Japan's largest hydrogen supplier, announced in June 2021 that it was considering the use of biomass made from palm husk (PKS) and wood pellets for power generation in order to produce liquefied green hydrogen. It will be the first company in Japan to produce liquefied green hydrogen. At the end of 2021, Sinopec's Xinjiang Kuqa Green Hydrogen Demonstration Plant will start construction. After completion in June 2023, it will be the world's largest plant to produce green hydrogen using solar energy. At the end of 2021, ENGIE, a large French power company, said it was considering opening a plant in Chile, in South America, to use solar energy to make hydrogen in its northern desert by 2025. Chile's green hydrogen production cost is considered to be the lowest in the world, more than 40% cheaper than Japan. Air Liquide, France, is building the world's largest liquefied hydrogen plant in Nevada, US. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2021, with a daily output of about 30 tons, equivalent to the full capacity of 42,000 hydrogen vehicle. The process of splitting recycled natural gas from landfill gas, biogas and wastewater treatment gas into hydrogen and carbon dioxide is not zero-emission, but still significantly reduces carbon footprint. The company and ITOCHU announced in the spring of 2021 that they will also set up a plant of the same size in central Japan, where carbon dioxide will be recovered and sold to carbonated beverage and dry ice manufacturers. Both factories will supply hydrogen vehicle in the United States and Japan respectively.

According to a research report published by UBS analyst Gastreich in the summer of 2021, thanks to technological development, the cost of green hydrogen can be reduced by 75% in the next 10 years. It can be seen that the development of hydrogen fuel does not depend entirely on the number of hydrogen vehicle on the market. Under the premise of reducing carbon emissions, the application of hydrogen energy into clean power generation and the reduction of natural gas consumption has gradually become a trend, which is the biggest driving force for development. The governments and industries of major countries have invested considerable resources to develop hydrogen energy, and the cost reduction is expected, which will also pave the way for the popularization of hydrogen vehicle eventually.
